February is the perfect time to see one of the most beautiful sights that the province of Alicante can offer, the almond blossom fields. Let yourself be wrapped by the sweet aroma of white flowers with pink touches.
Spain is one of the largest almond producers in the world, the fruit of this precious tree that, between February and March every year, delights us with its beautiful flower. The best routes to see almond blossom are in the interior of Alicante, in places such as the Guadalest Valley, Pop Valley, Alcalalí or the Sierra de Aitana. In the surroundings of Elche, you can also enjoy almond fields, less than 30 minutes away from Guardamar or Torrevieja.
At this time the pollinating insects are doing their job and six months from now the fruit will be collected.
Almonds are nuts with multiple health benefits; they are rich in protein, healthy fat, vitamin E and minerals such as calcium, which makes strong bones and protects the heart, preventing cardiovascular disease and reducing blood cholesterol. They also help to have good eyesight.
In Spain we consume lots of almonds, in sweet recipes such as cakes and biscuits and also in savory recipes such as stews, sauces, etc. We eat them raw, toasted, fried, in oil… and we also use almond flour or almond milk. Almonds are the main ingredient in our traditional nougat, but there are other snacks like chocolate and many other traditional sweets in which almonds are essential.
But we don’t just eat it, almonds are a good ally of our skin and are used in soaps, gels, creams and body oils.
A nut with a million uses and benefits for our health, which year after year, provides us with a beautiful show. You can’t miss it!
