On the Costa Blanca, as in the rest of Spain, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are special dates full of meaning for all of us. It is a time to dream, marked by festivities and family reunions, but above all, a time of happiness and love, that fills the atmosphere in our homes.

    Familia en Navidad

In Ciudad Quesada, besides enjoying the traditional Christmas celebrations, we also enjoy the good weather that accompanies us all year round, even at Christmas time. During these dates, the usual temperatures in the area are up to 18ºC at midday, which allows us to enjoy sunny and mild days, something atypical in the rest of Spain and in most European countries.

Choosing Ciudad Quesada or the nearby areas (Guardamar, Torrevieja, La Mata or Orihuela Costa among others) as a tourist destination for Christmas could be your chance to live a sensational experience with your family and friends. You never know, you may end up falling in love with the surroundings, the people, the fiestas, the excellent gastronomy… Many former tourists are now regular visitors and even proud residents.

Ciudad Quesada’s magic and charm catches you, especially at Christmas time, and that’s why many of those who has the opportunity to visit us come back. Let us show you some of the reasons why.

    1. Traditions

On the Mediterranean Costa Blanca, you can enjoy different Christmas traditions, deeply rooted and passed down from generation to generation.

Here in Ciudad Quesada, as in any other place, its residents look forward to gather and celebrate Christmas with family and friends. So every year, we use the December long weekend (bank holidays around the festivities of the Immaculate Conception and the Constitution Day), to put up the Christmas decorations in our homes. Children are, of course, the stars of the show. They decorate the Christmas tree with great care because there is where their longed-for presents will magically appear on Christmas Day. These gifts will be part of their most memorable childhood memories.

We also place the Christmas crib, which is a representation of the birth of Baby Jesus. In addition, the little ones sing Christmas carols, using their best voices together with instruments such as tambourines and zambombas (hand drums), offering the best, most fun and more enjoyable live concerts. This is also a way for them to enchant the grown-ups and earn their aguinaldos (in Spain it is a Christmas custom consisting on children singing Christmas carols at home on Christmas evenings, accompanied by typical instruments, and the grown- ups give a small bonus). Did you know this?

    2. Gastronomy

Families normally get together at their homes to celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, where gastronomy is one of the essential elements.

Turkey, lamb, fish, seafood, cheese and good wines, are some of the must-haves at the Christmas Eve dinner. In our area, it is traditional to prepare cocido con pelotas (stew with meatballs) on Christmas Day, served on large platters containing pork, chicken or beef (accompanied by chickpeas, cardoon or pumpkin). This is a delicious dish, to enjoy and share with the family.

At the end of every meal, the sweet touch. In Alicante, our Turrón de Jijona (Nougat from Jijona) is typical, with a unique texture and flavour, a taste of Christmas in Alicante and throughout Spain. This dessert is usually accompanied by sweet wines or liqueurs. The typical one here is the Licor de Turrón (nougat liqueur) that has an amazing taste. We recommend you to try this combination, we are sure you will love it.

Finally, to end our family evenings, there is nothing better than cava, to toast to all of us getting together again next Christmas. A toast to health, success and prosperity for our families and friends, and above all, to being happy for another year in the land of good weather and sunshine, our beloved Alicante.

You might be one of those who prefer to leave the kitchen to a side and enjoy these moments by eating out in a restaurant to savour these precious delicacies. You can find the best and most varied gastronomy of the Costa Blanca Mediterranean style in Ciudad Quesada. We strongly recommend you the restaurant of the Hotel La Laguna Spa & Golf ****s, where the kitchen team and the rest of the staff will surprise you with the most delicious and innovative dishes. Don’t hesitate, this could be a good option for your Christmas Eve dinner or Christmas Day lunch.

    3. Events and leisure

Ciudad Quesada and the surrounding areas such as Torrevieja, Guardamar or Orihuela Costa are perfect to enjoy tourism and events so eagerly awaited at this time of the year. Doing so you will find out a little bit more about the environment, culture, gastronomy, and above all, fall in love with the locals and their charm.

If you don’t want to miss any event, we suggest you to visit the cultural programme of the Vega Baja for the month of December. This is a good opportunity to visit and discover wonderful places in the area and experience a Mediterranean-style Christmas.

    What are you waiting for?

    4. Sports

If you are a sports lover and you like to lead a healthy lifestyle, in Ciudad Quesada you will find a wide range of sporting activities to continue practising during the Christmas season, such as cycling, hiking, golf (in Ciudad Quesada we have the La Marquesa Golf Course) or even water sports such as sailing or windsurfing for the most enthusiastic.

Keeping fit at Christmas is also possible in Ciudad Quesada.
